The United States Has A National AI Education Strategy, Canada Does Not
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on April 23, 2025 requiring that ai education be added to the K-12 core curriculum in all schools in the United States of America. The order “Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth” plans for all students to be competent in the use and evaluation of ai tools and to incorporate ai into their daily coursework. Funding has been allocated toward training teachers in ai to ensure educators achieve a high level of ai competency.
Universities in the US are moving ahead with ai inclusion as well. For example, Ohio State University’s “ai fluency” initiative requires all students to learn how to use ai tools as well as know how to apply ai in their field of study.
Currently Canada does not have a national ai education strategy. Some provinces, schools, universities and community groups have incorporated ai training into their programs and curriculum, however, there is no consistency. Without a national ai education strategy Canadian students will not be able to compete for jobs in a world that requires ai competency.
